While this process has certainly not followed the path we would have predicted, we are so happy to share with you that we're FINALLY, after nearly 19 months, getting a youth foster care placement in our home! We are thrilled to meet our youth TOMORROW. I'm freaking out a little, actually A LOT, and have many questions racing through my mind- What if we're crappy parents? Am I really mature enough to take care of someone else? Am I too strict or too lenient? Will he like our family? Will my dogs feel neglected?
The youth that arrives in less than 24 hours is not the youth who was originally placed in our house (the youth from Mali is still waiting on his security clearance), rather this youth is from Somalia. We're rapidly researching the history, food, language and culture of Somalia. I've placed calls to our closest mosque's youth group, contacted the Imam, attempted to determine Mecca's directionality, and read about Ramadan. In just a few short hours he will be here, in our home, and I am so excited/nervous to meet him.
I'm looking forward to the everyday experiences with him- family dinners, drop offs to after school activities, hiking with our dogs. I'm looking forward to learning about his culture and background and sharing ours. I'm hopeful that we'll bond over our shared love of our dogs (fingers crossed!) and enjoy the beautiful spring sunshine together. But most of all, I'm looking forward to growing our family and having him here, in a safe, loving home.
